A useful portrait reference has enough resolution to see the eyes, nose, mouth and skin transitions clearly. Directional light and a natural expression are more helpful than a heavily filtered or compressed image.

Can you tattoo a portrait from an old photograph?

Sometimes. I need to assess the original image first. If important facial information is missing, I will explain the limitation rather than invent details that could change the likeness.

Is colour or black and grey better for a portrait tattoo?

Both can work. Black and grey puts more emphasis on tonal structure and light, while colour can reproduce skin tones, clothing and environmental colour. The best choice depends on the reference, surrounding tattoo work and the overall composition.

How small can a realistic portrait tattoo be?

There is no useful universal minimum because the face, reference and placement change the answer. If the portrait is too small to keep important facial structures readable, I will recommend increasing the scale or simplifying the composition.

The reference matters

Likeness starts before the needle.

For a portrait, I need enough information in the source image to understand the facial structure. Clear eyes, a readable mouth, natural light and an expression that actually feels like the person are more useful than aggressive filters or artificial sharpening.

If you have several photographs, send them all. One may be best for the expression, another for hair or a detail that is lost in the main image. I can assess what is usable before the project is booked.

Portraits can be standalone pieces or part of a larger realism composition.
