The Art of Monochrome

I'm Vladimir Vishar, and black and grey realism is one of my main specialities. I am now accepting enquiries for future London appointments. My work covers portraits, mythology, wildlife, dark realism, horror and architectural subjects, with every design built around your body's flow, placement, contrast and how it will read for years to come. Black and grey realism transforms diluted black ink into a full tonal spectrum — from the softest whisper of grey to the deepest shadow. The result is tattoo work that looks like a high-contrast black-and-white photograph rendered directly on skin.

This style excels with subjects that thrive on dramatic lighting: portraits, religious iconography, mythology, wildlife, dark realism and horror-inspired pieces, and architectural scenes. Every piece I create is custom-designed to follow the natural contours of your body, using light and shadow to create depth that feels genuinely three-dimensional.

Consultation

Share your idea — subject, references, placement, size. I'll give you an honest assessment, time estimate, and a clear plan.

Custom Design

Every design is created specifically for your body — anatomy, muscle flow, how it looks from different angles. You'll see the design on session day.

Tattooing

Sessions run up to 7 hours. Black and grey realism builds up gradually — structure first, then depth, shadow, and smooth transitions.

Black and grey realism is usually slightly faster than colour realism, but it still needs careful structure, contrast, smooth shading, and detail. As a rough guide: forearm or smaller areas usually take 1–2 full-day sessions; shoulder or upper arm usually takes 2–3 full-day sessions; and a full arm sleeve usually takes 6–8+ sessions. Larger areas are estimated after reviewing your idea, placement, size, skin, and references.
Black and grey tattoos age gracefully. The tones soften naturally, often developing a smoky quality that many find appealing. With proper aftercare and SPF, they hold detail and contrast for decades.
Portraits, religious and mythological scenes, wildlife, skulls, clocks, roses, dark realism and horror-inspired pieces, and architectural elements all work exceptionally well. Any subject with strong contrast and tonal range is ideal for this style.
Yes. Selective colour — coloured eyes, a red rose, a blue sky — creates a striking focal point within monochrome work. We'll discuss the best approach in your consultation.
My hourly rate is £140. I give an estimate after reviewing your idea, placement, size, skin, and references. Smaller 3–4 hour projects may be possible if the idea fits, but most medium and large black and grey realism work is planned as full-day sessions.
Send your idea, placement, approximate size, photos of the area if useful, subject photos, mood/style references, and examples of contrast or lighting you like. I build the design around body flow, scale, readability, skin, and placement limits. I do not use templates or repeat designs.
Black and grey realism uses diluted ink to create a full tonal range mimicking photography. Blackwork uses solid black for bold graphic designs and patterns. Fundamentally different techniques and aesthetics.
